On November 3rd City Harvest and Columbia Community Partnership for Health (CCPH) organized a tour of the 175th Street greenmarket. Tour participants met at CCPH and walked to the market located on 175th Street in the Plaza de las Americas as a group.

At the market there are tents for vendors offering fresh fruits and vegetables. Those taking part in the tour received three HealthBucks worth $2.00 each to use at the market that day. HealthBucks are vouchers used specifically at the market for community residents to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.

Anyone that joined the tour also had the option of participating in a cooking demonstration offered by GrowNYC, who run the 175th Street greenmarket. Those who participated in the cooking demonstration received an additional $2.00 HealthBuck from the market.

During the cooking demonstration, which lasted around 20 minutes, GrowNYC staff addressed creative ways to cook while using the whole vegetable. By cooking using the entire vegetable or fruit people can help reduce waste. By the end, participants received both a free sample of food and a handout about how to cook using the whole fruit or vegetable.

The last day for the 175th Street Greenmarket will be Thursday, November 17th, 2016. The market runs from 8:00am-4:00pm.
